Tables are often considered an ordinary part of the classroom, but you might be surprised how different table styles can impact children’s learning and the overall learning environment. Some table styles encourage group work, while others are great for art projects or play activities. Choosing a table style really depends on the ages of the children, the overall size of the classroom, the number of children in your care, and the intended use of the table in your learning environment.
Camoli Daycare Furniture offers tables in a variety of styles. Browse the buying guide below for information on each style and some tips on how to select the table style that best suits your classroom and students.
Choosing the best table style
Square school tables
Camoli offers square tables that can seat up to four students. The 24" x 24" measurements make them a great choice if you are looking for an activity table or a standard table style for children to sit in small groups. Children will sit closer together with a standard square table, which means they may be more likely to talk during quiet times. If you prefer to have several smaller tables in the classroom rather than one or two large tables, this table style will work for that purpose as well.
Rectangular school tables
Depending on how many students you want to comfortably seat at a table, Camoli offers a selection of rectangular tables for you to choose from. A rectangular table for four children will give children a little more space than a standard square table. Larger rectangular tables provide more room for additional seating, meaning you won't need as many tables for your classroom. Rectangular tables are ideal as activity tables, standard classroom tables, or larger group tables. They also work well for snacks and meals.
Round school tables
Camoli offers four round style tables. Both table styles can comfortably seat a minimum of four people, the only difference being the diameter size. Round tables are not as popular as square and rectangular tables, but they work well as activity tables or standard classroom tables. Round tables are also great for small groups, as each student can contribute equally to a centralized project or activity. Children also have more space, as chairs can be spaced further around the table.
Macaroni or horseshoe school tables
Tables of these shapes work well as a conference table for situations where a teacher needs to help a small group of students or have a conversation with parents. They also work well as a table where children can sit and listen to a teacher read a book to them or show them how to do an activity. Keep in mind that both of these table styles would not work well as a small group table. If a child sits on the side with only one chair, he or she may feel isolated from the group or have difficulty participating with others at the table.
Tips for Choosing the Best Table Shape for Your Daycare
Measure the space to determine what size table(s) will work best. Keep in mind that you need to leave plenty of space between tables to allow children to comfortably slide their chairs in and to allow you to circulate, observe, and interact with students.
Determine how many tables you need for the space. Whether you need several small tables or one or two large tables will determine which styles will work best for your classroom and students.
Define the purpose of the table(s). Do you need an activity table or a standard table that children can use for a variety of purposes? Or do you need a conference table to help students or meet with families?
Consider what style of table your students will enjoy the most and will best benefit the classroom learning environment. Do you want tables that encourage small group interactions or ones that give children a little more space to engage in individual activities and projects? Or do you want tables that encourage large group interactions?
